The Genuine Italian Vegetable-Tanned Leather Consortium is a group of certified tanneries that follow strict guidlines for tanning leather and operate under a quality seal called Pelle al Vegetable or the Genuine Italian Vegetable-Tanned Leather Consortium.

The quality standards are strict and have ten basic tenents, this article will highlight some of them:

  • It should be made in Tuscany
  • The tanneries of the Genuine Italian Vegetable-Tanned Leather Consortium are all located in Tuscany along the banks of Arno river, between Florence and Pisa.
  • Certified Quality
  • By joining the consortium, the tanneries agree to undergo 3d party quality controls by the : I.CE.C – Institute of Quality Certification for the Leather Sector.
  • No animal is killed for its skin
  • All the leather is repurposed from European farms which comply with EU legislation on animal welfare.
  • No chemicals are used in the tanning process
  • The leather is tanned using only plant based tannins.

      Furthermore, the tanneries have to use: 

      • Metal free leather
      • Using only natural raw materials,
      • Should hire and operate without any gender/ethnicity discrimination
      • Should operate following typical Italian standards for leather tanning
      • Follow ISO 26000 for social responsibility
      • Follow the logic of a circular economy
